This is a set of woodworking holdfasts as described by Andre Roubo and Joseph Moxon in their writings on traditional joinery. No traditional workbench is complete without a set of blacksmith forged holdfasts. Sometimes mistakenly called a bench dog, the holdfast is a primitive clamp for securing a piece of wood to the benchtop. To use, simply place the shaft of the holdfast into a hole that is approximately 1/8th inch larger than the diameter of the holdfast (available in 1/2 inch or 5/8) , then place the workpiece under the jaw of the holdfast. A hard strike to the neck of the holdfast with a mallet should secure the workpiece. Holdfasts work best when used as a pair, or in conjunction with bench dogs or a plane stop, and in hardwood benches that are a minimum of 1 inch thick, and thicker is better. Always use a thin spacer to prevent marring.
Set of 2 Holdfasts approximately 13 inches long.
